Australia’s only true youth radio station, SYN 90.7 FM, is ecstatic over the results of a recent ratings survey.

The comprehensive survey, conducted by Ian McNair of McNair Ingenuity, proves that more young Victorians are tuning into SYN in defiance of commercial and government-funded media.

Commanding an audience of over 124,000 listeners per week, the survey shows that SYN is gaining ground against the national youth broadcaster, Triple J, who managed a comparatively poor 216,000 listeners for the same period in Melbourne.

“SYN’s ratings prove that Melbourne’s youth community are looking for an alternative voice,” said Alicia Kegele, station president. “Young people just don’t listen to Triple J like they used to. SYN offers a local, authentic style that people can relate to. It’s radio programmed by youth, for youth.”

“SYN has emerged as a major player in a radio market dominated by powerful commercial operators,” agreed Bryce Ives, SYN General Manager. “We have forged a successful model of youth participation that entertains, engages and empowers young people of all backgrounds.”

Since beginning full-time broadcasting in 2003, SYN has led the way by providing a forum for young people to project a collective voice and has empowered a new generation of active media participants.
